Our Lands Success Story:

Protecting Black Diamond’s Forests and Rural Character

Cascade Land Conservancy is demonstrating The Cascade Agenda’s creative, market-based conservation strategies in communities throughout the Pacific Northwest.

A Landmark Agreement

Black Diamond was once a bustling, coal-mining town.  Now, thanks to an innovative conservation agreement, the city’s rural character, views of Mount Rainier and healthy forests are protected for future generations to enjoy.  Cascade Land Conservancy, the City of Black Diamond, Plum Creek Timber Company and King County fostered a deal to protect 1,600 acres of working forests and 500 acres of community parks.

Protecting Forests and Creating New Housing

Project partners negotiated a deal that restricts development on selected forest lands and transfers those development rights into the city’s business and residential areas.  Forests that provide employment, recreation and clean air and water are protected forever and new housing and business opportunities are created in the city.  Black Diamond’s economic, social and environmental future is made better for future generations.
