Community Stewards: Tacoma
History
Cascade Land Conservancy launched its pilot Community Stewards program in Tacoma in early 2009 with a Taking Action workshop, educating people about how to get involved in the local land use planning process. We then held a series of organizing meetings to identify issues of interest to the community. The group chose three issues and kicked off campaigns in May:
- Transforming the Dome District
- Trails for Tacoma (bike & pedestrian)
- Community Gardens and Parks
The Dome District campaign gained energy during the summer, and the group successfully worked with the City and Sound Transit to preserve an important habitat corridor.
Current work
Group members are currently working to start community gardens, specifically in the Eastside and North End.
How you can get involved
You can engage in the discussions around the campaigns on the group's website at www.communitystewards.net.
We always need more motivated community members to join us. Please contact Skye Schell at (206) 905-6891 or email to get involved.
